#19 ‘My Dream Is To Empower Deprived People’ (Daniela)

‘I am Daniela Gonzalez. I am 23 years old and I’m from Costa Rica. I grew up in a rural area without my parents. Instead I lived with my grandparents until they both past away. My Grandpa died when I was 12 and my grandmother when I was 17 years old.

I was raised in a very conservative way and had to go to a catholic nun high school. When I was in the nun high school we had different ceremonies: we had to accomplish to be grateful or enough to the lord. So when we were not doing well the stuff we were punished. For example lay down yourself to a corn. That hurts like shit and I still got scars on my knees from it.

But with the photographs I am able to express my emotions

Then, when I left the nun school I went to the University and my cousin gave me a professional  camera. I did not have a clue how to use this camera. I was teaching myself how to take pictures via online tutorials. And I just started to feel that I can have another perspective with that and express myself. Because usually I suck with words.  When something bothers me I usually don’t express it. But with the photographs I am able to express my emotions.

So this to leads my Dream: I want to have a NGO that is able to teach people about transgression of communication by photography and documentary videos. The NGO aims at empowering the people and make more integral communication.

The point is that I want to empower people who lack tools of communication, because I know how it is not to be able to express feelings. e.g. the girl called Laura I met in Guatemala. That girl asked how she can become a photographer. I just told her if you can feel it you can be whoever you want to be. There is no limit. Then, she told me that she never gonna be able to have a camera, because she belongs to a rural area called ‘Santa Maria de Jesus’ in Guatemala. She’s only 7 years old and taught me that – a shocker for me.

7-years old Laura checks out Daniela’s camera – a rising star?

I want to empower those kind of people like Laura so that they can do what they want to do and get professionals. Once she got the camera she will teach herself like I did.
